South Middle School Pilot

THE SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

Morgantown's South Middle School piloted a new approach to the K-12 Speakers Bureau during the 2023-2024 school year.

A NEW APPROACH

Welcoming speakers from different career clusters

South Middle School’s guidance counselor and WVPEC staff organized speaker visits once a month for seventh and eighth graders (500+ students) during their career exploration period.

Each speaker covered a different WVDE CTE career cluster, so students learned about various in-demand career pathways in West Virginia.

GOALS

We want to help coordinate inspirational, informative West Virginia experts to speak to students in a fun, engaging way.

We hope to share insights statewide so schools can tailor the South Middle School experience to help expose students to different people and professions.

Words from schools and Speakers

This helped South Middle to be able to build a network with the community and allowed students to be able to see successful individuals within WV that pursue different career options and show the possibilities for WV students.”

South Middle School

The SB program served as the next best thing for students to be able to explore different options and set goals and discover new careers while they are still in middle school.”

South Middle School

Young people need to know that in a time where they are learning about themselves and figuring it out, resources are available to help. When you look in the mirror each day, you are more than what you see. Learn to see what you can become with the help of the Speakers Bureau and the positive messages the men and women share. It is an excellent resource to help you learn all things are possible with God and the right people.”

Pastor Junius Lewis

A collaboration of West Virginia’s leaders with the WVPEC is a great way to lead our state to a better and brighter future. I appreciate the opportunity to share my experience with the young minds of West Virginia.”
