Summer SPARKS

Improving school readiness, phonemic awareness and social-emotional skills.

Who will benefit?

Wood County Schools’ Office of Early Learning students in PreK-1 grade of low socioeconomic status, along with their caregivers.

Project Highlights:

Wood County Schools’ Office of Early Learning will assess PreK through first-grade students in phonemic awareness, testing how they identify and manipulate sounds through spoken language. Participating educators will then work with students to improve assessment scores through tailored curriculum during the school year.

Special community trainings will also be offered to engage families and caregivers. Trainings will provide insights on how to encourage and assist children’s reading skills at home as well as how to help children process and express feelings through social-emotional awareness. In addition, the Parkersburg Wood County Public Library bookmobile will visit weekly to provide students the opportunity to check out books to take home and read with their families.

Collaborative Partners: Parkersburg Wood County Public Library and Parkersburg Housing Authority.

Funded by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.
