Building Self-Efficacy One Writer at a Time through I CAN Plans and STEAM Journal Writing Clubs

Teaching writing to enhance reading comprehension, fluency and literacy skills.

Who will benefit?

Nearly 500 students in Pre-K-3 grade, including students who receive Title I services, students of low socioeconomic status, those reading below grade level, English language learners and students who live in rural communities.

Project Highlights:

Participating schools will begin class with an “I CAN” writing activity to help students become stronger writers by teaching them the basic framework of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, creating a rough draft, reviewing that work and crafting a final product. Through intensive pullout sessions and afterschool STEAM writing club meetings, teachers will also work with students who struggle with common writing skills, such as pencil grip, letter identification, leaving spaces between words, using a left-to-right progression when writing, among others.
