Hoda Heidari

Hoda Heidari is the K&L Gates Career Development Assistant Professor in Ethics and Computational Technologies at Carnegie Mellon University with joint appointments in the Machine Learning Department and the Institute for Software, Systems, and Society. She is also affiliated with the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at CMU. She co-founded and co-led the university-wide Responsible AI Initiative until 2025 and I co-chair the K & L Gates Initiative for Ethics and Computational Technologies.

She is broadly interested in the Ethical, Societal, and Policy Implications of Artificial Intelligence. The overarching goal of my work is to develop a robust system of governance around the technology. In particular, her research has addressed issues of Fairness and Accountability for AI. The current focus of her research is on the Evaluation of Risks and Benefits of General-purpose AI.

Heidari’s work has been generously supported by the NSF Program on Fairness in AI in Collaboration with Amazon, PwC, CyLab, Meta, and J. P. Morgan. She is a senior personnel at AI-SDM: the NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making.
