Sal Khan

Sal Khan is the founder and CEO of the education nonprofit Khan Academy as well as the vision steward of TED.

Sal began by tutoring his cousins remotely as a hobby. Over the past two decades, his efforts have grown into a global learning platform used by more than 190 million registered users in 190 countries. Khan Academy offers free interactive exercises, instructional videos, and teacher tools across subjects like math, science, the humanities, writing, and SAT prep. School districts use Khan Academy’s district offerings—Khan Academy Districts and Khan Academy Kids—to support teachers and students. The nonprofit is pioneering AI in education with Khanmigo, an AI tool designed to serve as both a tutor and a teaching assistant. Khanmigo is used in more than 380 school districts in the United States, as well as in India, Brazil, and the Philippines.

In addition to Khan Academy, Sal founded or co-founded three additional educational nonprofits:

  • Khan Lab School, an experimental school in California based on the ideas in his first book, The One World Schoolhouse
  • Schoolhouse.world, which connects students for free, live peer-to-peer tutoring and civil dialogues
  • Khan World School, an online school for grades 6–12 that brings together students from around the globe

Sal is the author of Brave New Words, a book about the future of AI in education, and co-author of Teaching Students to Use AI Ethically & Responsibly, a resource for educators, parents and school leaders.

He has been recognized as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People and featured on 60 Minutes, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Fox Business, and Education Week.
