Dr. Maroon is Professor and Vice Chairman of Neurosurgery and Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh. At Indiana University, he was a Scholastic All American in football and received his medical and neurosurgical education at Indiana, Oxford (England), Georgetown and the University of Vermont.
He has served as the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 40 years and was the first neurosurgeon directly appointed in the NFL by coach Chuck Noll and Dan Rooney. In addition, he has served as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Chuck Noll Foundation for the prevention of brain and spinal injuries in sports. He is also a member of the NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee and the former Medical Director of World Wrestling Entertainment Corporation (WWE).
Dr. Maroon co-developed the ImPACT neurocognitive test, the standard of care for return to play in all contact sports and changed the management of sport concussions nationally. Over 25 million tests have been performed. He also has received Indiana University Distinguished Alumni Service Award, Jerome Bettis Humanitarian of the Year Award and Lou Holtz Hall of Fame with Joe Montana and Kareem Jabbar for contributions to sports medicine. Dr. Maroon has published 330 peer reviewed papers, 54 book chapters and 6 books. He is also the former President of the National Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
In 2025, Dr. Maroon was inducted into the Ellis Island Honor Society for outstanding commitment and contributions to society, the country and sports medicine. Other awardees include 8 US Presidents, 8 Nobel Laureates, along with CEOs of Apple, IBM, PepsiCo, Google and more.
Dr. Maroon is presently involved with clinical trials with novel immunotherapeutic approach to cancer and new diagnostic and therapeutic approach for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Dr. Maroon is a nationally ranked triathlete. He has competed in 80 triathlons and 8 ironman distances, including 5X the World Triathlon Championship in Kona, Hawaii. He has also been inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame (Chicago) and is the Senior VP of American Academy of Anti-aging Medicine.
